Pergamon Museum Sculpture Reproductions

The Pergamon Museum was built between 1910 and 1930 to replace a smaller building that stood in the same spot from 1901 to 1909. This smaller building had housed the important excavation finds of the Berlin Museums but due to a faulty foundation the building suffered structural damage and had to be demolished. The new building was designed by Alfred Messel. Its construction was supervised by Ludwig Hoffman. It houses three separate museums; the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art. The main attraction of the Pergamon Museum is the Pergamon Altar, also known as the Altar of Zeus, a masterpiece of Hellenistic art depicting the battle between the Gods and Giants.
