Found in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods at Samothrace in 1863 this personification of Victory is shown landing in flight, wings still outstretched. She was originally set on the prow of a ship, which stood in a reflecting pool at the top of a cliff looking out over the sea. It is believed the statue was meant to commemorate a naval victory of Rhodes over Antiochus III of Syria early in the second century B.C.E. c.190 B.C.E.
