The original statue is made of painted wood, glass, cord and human hair. Zurbaran’s painting of the saint from 1640 possibly inspired this sculpture. Created in 1663 it had never left the Toledo Cathedral until the National Gallery of Art’s The Sacred Made Real Spanish Painting and Sculpture, 1600-1700 Exhibited in the National Gallery of Art February through May 2010.
