During the Renaissance it became popular for various rulers and wealthy families to commission medals. Inspired by Roman coins, the medals were an inexpensive, easy way to circulate images of important figures. In addition to an image there was often a message that served to convey political propaganda. This medal’s inscription, created c. 1465/1469, translates to read, “Cosimo de Medici, the Father of the Country by Public Decree.”
