Bertel Thorvaldsen Sculpture Reproductions
November 19, 1770-March 23, 1844 Thorvaldsen was the first internationally acclaimed Danish artist. He was prominent in the Neoclassical period and lived in Rome for more than forty years. He entered the Art Academy in Copenhagen at the age of 11 and was educated as a sculptor until 1793. He traveled to Rome in 1796 on a scholarship from the Academy to study for three years and ended up staying for forty years receiving many orders and establishing his fame. He returned to Copenhagen in 1838 and in 1839 construction for a museum to house his many works started. The Thorvaldsen Museum was finished in 1848. Thorvaldsen is buried in the museum’s courtyard.
